5 Carpet Wools
Low coarse wool, usually obtained from native or unimproved sheep and used in the manufacture of carpets. These wools have a " boardiness " and harshness necessary for durability of pile, i.e., for the prevention of " matting." British wool, particularly from the coarser-woolled type of improved sheep, is sometimes termed carpet wool and put to the same use as black-faced and other true carpet wools. -

7 Carpet Yarns
For the manufacture of carpets a full handling thread is necessary, the fibre must be strong and suitable for dyeing in bright colours. The wools mostly used are Scotch black-faced. East Indian, the lower qualities of English and Colonial wools. These yarns are usually spun on the worsted principle, and are carded, open drawn and flyer spun. Some are combed, but when the thread is required to have filling characteristics this operation is omitted. For Brussels and tapestry carpets. East Indian and Scottish black-faced wools are used. Wilton and Axminster carpets are usually made from Welsh or Down wools. -

A thin padding of carded cotton or jute is laid between strips of low quality cotton cloth, or even between strips of paper, and either pasted down or the two layers are stitched together. -

10 Kalin Carpet
A pile carpet made in the Lahore and Amritsar prisons, with a strong cotton or hemp warp and weft and wool pile. The carpet is made by alternating one row of knots with one pick of weft. They are also made in Bihar and Orissa of all cotton to resemble the woollen pile carpet. Also known as Kalicha Carpets. -
11 List Carpet
A factory-carpet made similar to the home-made rag carpets in the U.S.A. A very strong and thick cotton warp is used and the weft is made of waste cuttings from tailors' shops and clothing factories. The term is also applied to rag carpets formerly largely made by pioneer farmers as above, but the weft was made of discarded clothing cut into narrow strips and these strips stitched together in long lengths. -
12 Baroda Carpet
A famous carpet designed as an offering to the tomb of Mahomet at Medina. It was wrought by the master craft artists, skilled embroiderers and weavers of Baroda, who were three years (1866-1869) in its production. It is a species of embroidered jewellery or a superb tissue of pearls, rubies, sapphires and diamonds. Of tapestry formation, closely resembling terry weaving in the ground sections. -
13 Bokhara Carpet
All-wool knotted carpet, with long pile. Ground is usually of bright red or reddish-brown with various ochre and other coloured patterns. The weave is not close. The designs are geometrical, the octagon being continuously used in all-over effects. Borders are usually in check effects. -
14 Boudoir Carpet
A reversible, plain weave, union carpet made of worsted and cotton yarns. They are very heavy and firmly constructed. The warp is arranged 1-end 2/30's cotton (as binder), 1-end of coarse cotton (as wadding), 1-end 2/30's cotton binder, set 18 to 20-ends per inch. The wefts are 1 pick 2/5's crossbred worsted, 1 pick 8 skeins, bi-fibred yam and 1 pick 2/5's worsted, 24 picks per inch. -
15 Sindh Carpet
A carpet made in Sindh, India, from coarse cotton warp and hemp weft and usually cowhair pile or knots. They are the cheapest, coarsest and least durable of Indian carpets. Formerly they were of high-class make both in material, design and colour, but have greatly deteriorated. The patterns are bold. -
16 Baku Carpet
Oriental hand-knotted carpet, made of wool. The chief design motif is a conventionalised pear (see pear design). These carpets are very rare, as modern methods produce much cheaper. -

Carpets of the Kidderminster type. The designs are based on the " key " figuring principle. Two wefts are used for figure and another for stitching or binding. Strong and thick folded yarns are used for the ground and wool weft for figuring. The carpets are reversible.
